On Saturday November 14th, an award-winning ensemble will appear for the first time at the Music in New Radnor concert series. The Bute Wind Quintet, graduates from the Masters in Orchestral Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, has won the June Emerson Wind Music Launchpad Prize twice and are all champions of the diversity of the wind quintet genre.

As well as busy freelance careers, the ensemble held a two year Artists Residency at the Norwegian Church Arts Centre in Cardiff.

Their programme for Music in New Radnor consists mainly of works especially written for wind quintet. The works range from the elegance of Haydn and Taffanel, through the lyricism of Mervyn Burtch and James MacMillan to the virtuosic pieces of Ligetti, Ibert and Valerie Coleman, whose featured work Tzigane is a high-charged, passionate journey through woodwind virtuosity.

Mary Tolhurst, speaking for Music in New Radnor said: “A wind quintet sounds magnificent in the marvellous resonant acoustic of the Community Hall in New Radnor. It’s quite unusual to find a programme of works especially written for wind quintet so this will be a real treat for wind ensemble lovers.”

New Radnor is 7 miles west of Kington on the A44. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30 start. Tickets are £15 and can be reserved in advance, from 01544 350746 / 07493 940683. (NB: BYOB – no bar this time).
