TRAFFIC was brought to a standstill in Brecon for a traditional funeral.

Members of the Nepalese community were attending the funeral at the Brecon Workman’s Club on Wednesday for Janga Gurung who died aged 87.

Police controlled traffic to allow the funeral cars to make their way from the funeral service at the Watergate to Cradoc Cemetery while mourners made their way on foot to the cemetery.

Mr Gurung lived with his son, Aita Gurung, in Crickhowell.

Major Khusiman Gurung, of Brecon, said the funeral was a traditional Gurung funeral.

He said: "Gurung is one of the tribes. It is a traditional funeral conducted by Gurung priests Lhebri and Pachchyu. We would normally walk with the coffin.

"The funeral was attended by around 400 people from all over the UK and organised by the Nepalese community in Brecon."

The coffin was accompanied by the Lhebri Chiba senior priests, who led the funeral, as it was brought from the service to the hearse while a woman laid rice, pennies and flowers in the path of the mourners.

The late Mr Gurung had been living with his son, in Crickhowell, for the past five years said Major Gurung who also thanked the police for their assistance.
