Filming has begun in Bannau Brycheiniog as part of a brand new Welsh BBC comedy bringing together two of Wales’ best-known comedy names.

The new six-part series, Better Later, stars and is co-written by Ruth Jones and Steve Speirs, and is described as a comedy looking at the unexpected joys of an unlikely friendship.

Production is currently taking place across South Wales, with filming locations including Bannau Brycheiniog. The series is set in a fictional village called Brynfach.

The comedy centres on two characters who meet at a knee trauma clinic: Clive, a 60-year-old retired teacher and widower played by Speirs, and Shelley Anne, a 55-year-old environmental health officer played by Jones, who is going through a bitter divorce.

Commissioned from BBC Cymru Wales and BBC Comedy and made by Tidy Productions in association with BBC Studios Comedy, the series has also received support from Creative Wales.

Jones said the project has been a long time in the making. She said: “In a funny way this show has been 35 years in the making, which is when I first met Steve. It’s not that we’re slow writers it’s just that we’ve been up to other things. It’s fantastic to be back in front of the camera with him again.”

Speirs added: “Our first time acting together for quite a long time, Ruth makes me laugh more than anyone and I’m a terrible giggler. This could be a long shoot.”

Transmission details will be announced at a later date.
