A new creative hub has opened its doors in Brecon town centre, bringing together books, art and community under one roof.
The Literature Laboratory, located at 11a Lion Street, is more than just a shop. It is a space for discovery, conversation and imagination, designed for both children and adults.
The hub stocks a carefully curated selection of books and gifts, ranging from local Welsh voices to international titles. It also hosts workshops, readings and community events. The ethos of the shop is built on the idea that reading well helps people live well and be well. Its books aim to promote wellbeing, a love of the natural world, resilience in children and families, and confidence-building.
Director Rebecca Watkins explained: “This is a place for children and their families, for anyone who wants to join the adventure. It’s about bringing people together through stories, imagination and community spirit.”
The Literature Laboratory is also seeking local schools to participate in its Literature Ambassador program. The initiative will work directly with pupils, help re-energise school libraries with children’s choices, and curate Wellbeing Library Shelves to support pupils who struggle with self-confidence, anxiety or learning challenges.
Rebecca added that the aim is to make Brecon a beacon for literacy and creative activity in Mid Wales. The project has already attracted interest from local authors and schools, with plans for further collaborations across Powys.
Schools interested in the Literature Ambassador program can contact Rebecca at [email protected] or visit the hub at 11a Lion Street.
