The café at Brecon’s showpiece attraction y Gaer is set to open in the new year.

Operated by Brecon Beacons College under their partnership and lease agreement with Powys County Council, it is anticipated that the café will boost the town’s education and cultural centre, and provide an even greater visitor experience.

The café is set to open on Monday, January 16.

Brecon Beacons College is currently recruiting staff for the café, and anyone interested in working in the new and exciting catering facility is encouraged to apply via https://www.nptcgroup.ac.uk/about-us/job-vacancies/

Portfolio Holder for a Prosperous Powys Councillor David Selby said: “We are extremely pleased that the café is opening in January. y Gaer is the council’s flagship attraction in Brecon and being able to provide food and refreshments adds to the already significant offer for library and museum visitors.”

Catherine Lewis, Acting Principal and CEO of NPTC Group of Colleges added: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Powys County Council on this project.

"It’s part of a bigger regeneration project which will bring considerable regeneration benefits to Brecon, boosting the trade of shops and businesses and breathing more life into the town centre.”

Work is also ongoing to fit-out some of the rooms in y Gaer to create teaching spaces and a library for Brecon Beacons College lecturers and students, who will move from their current location into y Gaer in phases in 2023. Once completed it is anticipated that y Gaer will become a major educational and cultural destination for Powys residents and visitors to the county.

The town centre facility, which opened in December 2019, is a major capital development led by the county council with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and a number of funding partners. It involved the restoration and refurbishment of the Grade II listed Brecknock Museum building combining with an innovative new adjoining library and community building to create a ‘cultural hub’.
