OLDER people’s day centres in Powys will close temporarily on Friday in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
People aged over 70 with underlying health conditions were told on Monday this week they should avoid social contact for the next 12 weeks.
Today Powys council announced the day centres will close on Friday, March 20 and the decision will be reviewed in due course.
The affected centres are Arlais Day Centre in Llandrindod Wells, Arosfa in Brecon, Canolfan in Ystradgynlais and the East Radnor Day Centre in Presteigne.
Maesywennol in Llanidloes, Park Day Centre, Newtown, Day centre at Bethshan, Newtown ( day centre element only), Ann Holloway Welshpool and Hafal Crossroads, Machynlleth will also all close temporarily or already have done.
Cllr Myfanwy Alexander, the council’s cabinet member for adult social care said: "In difficult times like these, we have to make some tough decisions. We know very well how much our day centres are valued by those who use them and by their families but our priority has to be the safety of the vulnerable.
"We have plans in place to support people in their own homes and I will greatly look forward to calling in for a cup of tea when the service is resumed when the crisis is over."
The council is putting in place support for those people who will require a meal and personal care, which they normally receive at the day centres. The council is also asking that people in Powys consider elderly people in their communities who may be at risk of isolation and reach out to them by telephone at this difficult time.
