A BUSINESSMAN has been appointed by Powys County Council to run the Lakeside Restaurant in Llandrindod Wells.

The loss making restaurant was closed in September last year after the authority announced it intended to seek a private operator to run the attraction on a business lease for five years.

The authority says it is not yet in a position to name the operator but claimed it is a 'major' step towards re-opening the outlet.

The council advertised for interested parties to come forward in April and says it has now appointed the successful candidate, but says it is not yet in a position to publicly announce the operator.

Councillor Garry Banks, the cabinet member for property and assets said: "The successful bidder has innovative ideas, particularly regarding engaging with the local community, and has a successful business background, with a highly experienced team behind him which includes catering experience.

"We are hoping to announce the identity of the successful operator shortly and could see the iconic lakeside facility reopen in the very near future."
