A planning application has been submitted for the proposed new primary school building in Sennybridge, the county council has announced.
The council has now formally applied to build a 120-place school to replace the current Sennybridge C.P. School building, which the authority says is no longer suitable for delivering the modern curriculum or meeting pupils’ well-being needs.
The application will be considered by the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority.
Plans for the replacement school went on public display last month, when contractors held a drop-in session at the current school to show parents and residents what would be included in the submission.
The proposed building would provide updated teaching spaces designed to support learning from the Foundation Stage through to the end of Key Stage 2. Early-years childcare provision would also be located on the same site.
The project would see the demolition of the current building and the construction of a modern replacement designed to meet Net Zero Carbon standards in operation, align with Welsh Government carbon targets, and achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating for sustainability.
The new building would include an early years facility, a reception classroom, Key Stage 1 and 2 classrooms, a school hall, library, and a community room. Outside, plans feature both soft and hard play areas as well as a new multi-use games area (MUGA).
The project forms part of the council’s wider programme to modernise education facilities across the county.
Cllr James Gibson-Watt, Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys, said: “Submitting the planning application marks an important milestone in delivering a new school for Sennybridge.
“This investment will ensure pupils have access to facilities that meet modern standards and support their learning and well-being. It also reflects our commitment to transforming education and building a stronger, fairer, greener future for Powys.”
