Most households in Powys will see a change to their waste and recycling collection day from Monday, March 2, 2026, as the county council rolls out new collection routes aimed at making the service more efficient.
Powys County Council says the changes will affect the majority of homes across the county, with residents asked to check their new collection day once it is confirmed. Recycling and food waste will continue to be collected weekly, while non-recyclable waste will be collected every three weeks. Householders are being reminded to put their bins out by 7:30am on their collection day.
The council is introducing the new routes as part of a wider review of how waste and recycling is collected across Powys, which covers more than 69,000 properties spread over 2,000 square miles. Officials say the scale and geography of the county mean the service needs to be regularly reviewed to keep it running effectively.
Residents will receive a letter in the coming weeks setting out their new collection day, along with information on how to make the most of their recycling service. Details will also be available online, and county councillors and town and community councils are due to be briefed on the changes.
Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, said: “We consider many things when reviewing or creating new collection routes, including where new homes are being built, changes made to roads, new or upgraded vehicles, changes to environmental laws, pressure on the council’s budget, and how our service affects carbon emissions.
“By taking all this into account and using specialist route optimisation software and the experience of our operational teams, the rounds have been made more efficient. This means many households will see a change in their collection day.”
