THERE’s always a silver lining and despite losing out in the American Presidential Election this week, Hillary Clinton can take solace in the fact she descends from Welsh heritage.
Experts reported during this year’s National Eisteddfod, held in Abergavenny, that Mrs Clinton’s paternal great grandparents were in fact from the area.
In her autobiography, Hillary wrote that her father got his looks from a "long line of black-haired coalminers" and that "Wales has a special place in her heart".
It was revealed on BBC Wales that that the connection was in fact even stronger.
Her great grandfather was Llangynidr man, John Jones while her great grandmother, Mary Griffiths, was from Abergavenny and alongside thousands of other coalminers and their families, John and Mary moved to Pennsylvania, where Hillary’s grandmother, Hannah Jones, was born in 1883.
Despite losing out to Donald Trump in this week’s election, The White House is no stranger to resident’s with Welsh connections.
Five of the first six Presidents of the USA were of Welsh Descent and the 10 to date with Welsh connections include John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Morrison Jnr, James Monroe, William Harrison, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Harrison, James A Garfield and Calvin Coolidge.
