James Evans has called it “a sad day” for the Conservative Party, following the resignation of Liz Truss.

The MS for Brecon and Radnorshire said whoever the new leader is, they must have a mandate from Party members.

Prime Minister Liz Truss resigned as UK Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party this afternoon.

Speaking outside Downing Street, she said she could not deliver the mandate on which she was elected.

This has kickstarted a contest to find the next Tory leader and PM, which will be completed over the next week.

Mr Evans said: “It’s a sad day for the Conservative party. A leader democratically elected by the membership of our party has been removed from office.

“Whoever the next leader is, they must have a mandate from our members. All elected officials serve at the privilege of our members who select us to stand. We must never forget that is what members pay their membership fees for, and to deny any of them a say would be a disaster.”
