A SECONDARY school in Radnorshire placed in special measures is set to close.

Powys County Council's cabinet has agreed a plan to close John Beddoes School in Presteigne and re-open it as part of Newtown High School.

The plan, which will now go out to consultation, has been described as radical by Powys council's cabinet member for education Myfanwy Alexander.

She said the council had been forced to come up with bold proposals after the Welsh Government said the 354 pupil school, which dates back to Elizabethan times, should close.
