SECONDARY schools in Powys are facing a £2 million funding black hole - forcing heads to call for closures.
Powys County Council has released a report carried out by accountants Price Waterhouse Cooper (PWC) examining the financially viability of all 12 secondary schools in the county.
In the report headteachers say school closures are needed but doubt Powys County Council has the will to take tough decisions.
The council has now voted for a review of secondary education in Powys, the council's cabinet had previously only committed to reviewing post 16 education.
Cabinet member for schools, Councillor Arwel Jones said a reduction in funding for the council and falling pupil numbers are causing financial difficulties for schools and current cost cutting measures they have taken may not be enough.
Cllr Jones hinted at possible closures: "Even concerted cost management may not be enough to avoid structural change to secondary and post 16 education."
