Young people across Powys are being invited to take part in a summer volunteering scheme aimed at encouraging children to read for pleasure during the school holidays.
Those aged between 14 and 25 are being encouraged to support this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, delivered through local libraries and run nationally by The Reading Agency.
The initiative, which runs in Powys libraries throughout the summer, is designed to help children aged four to 11 keep reading during the long break. This year’s theme, Read to the Beat, focuses on music, rhythm and creativity, with activities and book choices designed to keep children engaged.
Volunteers will be based in their local library, helping children sign up for the challenge, select books and track their progress. They will also assist with themed activities, support events, and help prepare displays and resources linked to the programme.
Nina Davies, Director of Social Services and Wellbeing at Powys County Council, said: “We’d love to hear from young people across Powys who want to support children’s reading this summer. This volunteering opportunity is a great way to be part of something positive in your local community, help you build confidence, develop skills and gain experience which could help you with future with job applications, apprenticeships or UCAS personal statements.”
The council said no previous experience is required, with full training, induction and ongoing support provided by library staff. Volunteers will be expected to be friendly and comfortable working with children and families.
Those aged 16 to 25 will need an enhanced DBS check, which will be arranged as part of the application process. The time commitment is between one and three hours per week from mid-July through to the end of August.
Applications are open online at https://storipowys.org.uk/summer-reading-challenge-volunteers/ with a closing date of Friday, June 5.
