Retailers in Powys are being reminded that the sale and supply of single-use vapes is now illegal, following a new ban that came into effect across Wales on June 1.

Under the Environmental Protection (Single-use Vapes) (Wales) Regulations 2024, it is a criminal offence to sell or offer disposable vapes - including those containing nicotine, CBD, vitamins or other substances - to consumers.

The legislation aims to reduce the environmental damage caused by the production and improper disposal of single-use vape products.

Businesses are now required to stop selling or buying disposable vapes, and ensure staff are aware of the new rules.

To comply with the law, vape products must be reusable. This means they must be rechargeable, refillable, and contain a replaceable coil or a compatible component.

Retailers with remaining stock of banned products are being advised to contact suppliers or disposal companies to arrange safe and legal recycling.

Cllr Richard Church, Cabinet Member for Legal and Regulatory Services, said: “I welcome the news that single use vapes have now been banned. This marks a significant step forward in protecting public health and reducing the environmental harm these products can cause across our county.

“It’s also vital that businesses and residents understand the correct disposal methods for these items.

“Single-use vapes must never be placed in household waste due to the serious fire risk they pose.”

The council is encouraging residents to take used vapes to a designated household recycling centre. Retailers should also offer a spent vape collection service.
