GRASS verges in and around Brecon will soon be blooming with colour, thanks to volunteers from the Prince’s Trust.
As part of their rural skills programme, Prince’s Trust volunteers have been planting wildflower seeds at Camden Road and Cradoc Road in Brecon.
Areas that would benefit from the wildflower verges were identified by Brecon Beacons National Park Authority’s community development team working with Powys council.
The community development team secured a grant to support the project from the authority’s sustainable development fund.
Eleanor Flaherty, BBNPA community development officer, said planting up roadside verges with native wildflower meadows would increase biodiversity in Brecon, including supporting pollinators, and cut the council’s landscaping costs.
She said: “Currently there are many pockets of land around Brecon which contain only scrub grass and are of limited value to wildlife. A wildflower verge would increase biodiversity and help the council save landscaping costs as meadows need cutting only once a year.”
