On Saturday, 29 November, Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team received their 175th request for help and deployed team members to their 150th incident of 2025.
At 11:15am the team were requested to assist a walking group on the Neuadd Ridge in Bannau Brycheiniog with one of their members who had become unwell and collapsed.
The group showed a textbook example of what to do in this situation, firstly calling for help.
Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team responded into the Neuadd Valley fully expecting to be ascending the ridge to provide medical care and a stretcher evacuation.
With the location and description of the casualty condition, the team asked for Maritime and Coastguard Agency HMCG Helicopter St Athan and Brecon Mountain Rescue Team to be on standby to assist. Because of what happened next neither were required.
The group were able to care for and assist the casualty to slowly walk her back down the ridge and off the mountain towards the road.
A spokesperson for Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team praised the walkers actions. They said: “Usually we ask people to stay where they are until we get to them but on this occasion with the casualty able to be mobile off the mountain this saved us time but also saved the whole group getting cold.
“Here’s the important bit - in doing what they did, the group also maintained phone contact with our incident controller to keep us informed on what they were doing so we knew where they were at all times and knew we’d be meeting them as they came off the mountain.
“Once at the roadside, the casualty was fully assessed by one of our team Doctors and two of our Remote Rescue Medics. Once they were happy the lady had fully recovered from her episode we escorted the whole group safely to their vehicles.
“We hope the group returns to complete their walk in the future. Well done to all the group for a job well done!”
