Rhayader and District Male Voice Choir honoured their pianist, Bethan Thomas, at their annual concert on Saturday, June 21.
Bethan, who has accompanied the choir since 2005, was presented with a curved plaque in recognition of her 20 years of service.
Choir President Mike Bennett paid tribute to Bethan’s dedication and musical talent, praising the vital role she has played in supporting and inspiring the choir. Members said they looked forward to continuing their partnership with her in the years ahead.
The concert itself was extremely successful and the choir sang with their usual aplomb. They performed 14 songs and were conducted by the choir’s equally dedicated musical director Jonathan Pearce.
The concert also featured solo performances from local primary school teacher and vocalist Rhian Hughes, from Maesgwyn, and James Oakley, arranged in partnership with the charity Loud Applause Rising Star (LARS). Rhian performed three songs, including Elton John’s Candle in the Wind/Goodbye English Rose, before joining the choir for The Rose.
21-year-old James Oakley from Llannon sang two traditional Welsh pieces and two emotive songs from musicals, later joining the choir for Anfonaf Angel. Currently studying Voice and Opera at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, James’s appearance reflects the choir’s commitment to nurturing young talent and sharing their gifts with the community.
The Rhayader choir’s annual concert is always dedicated to supporting local charities, and this year they proudly backed The Bracken Trust, a cancer support organisation based in Llandrindod Wells. Emma Coates, the charity’s fundraiser, attended the event and expressed her delight at the choir’s support. All proceeds from the concert will be donated to Emma on behalf of The Bracken Trust in the near future.
