CAMPAIGNERS battling to save Gwernyfed High School from closure are being urged to take their fight to the Welsh Assembly.

The school’s chair of governors Reverend Ian Charlesworth and headteacher John Williams have promised to fight Powys County Council’s plan to close the school.

A packed public meeting held at the school was told it is intended to appeal directly to the Welsh Government to intervene in the process and supporters have been asked to write directly to ministers in Cardiff Bay.

The council wants to close Gwernyfed and Brecon High to create a new 11 to 16 school, which will operate from the two existing sites until a new school building can be built at Brecon.

The proposals were put on hold last summer after the council had failed to follow school closure guidelines but revived this year and approved by the cabinet last week.

Rev Charlesworth said: "Finance is driving this. It’s about accessing a pot of money from the Welsh Government to rebuild Brecon High School.

"We will fight with everything we have, and we will win, because they are basing their whole argument on complete fallacies.

"Their proposals are neither transformational, visionary or inspirational - and these are all things the Welsh Government is looking for."

Head Mr Williams said: "When these proposals were first raised in March last year, no pupils left Gwernyfed, no staff left Gwernyfed, or applied for other posts, no staff wanted to leave Gwernyfed.

"Please stick with us - I say that to pupils, and community and parents as well."
