Over the past nine months, the Gwernyfed community has been actively engaged in a wide range of fundraising activities to provide a new school and community minibus.

These have included the incredibly successful Massed Choirs at Hay Festival, when the Gwernyfed catchment primary schools, high school, Talgarth Male Voice Choir and Hay Community Choir all came together to produce a very enjoyable and memorable evening of music. There was also a Grand Raffle with prizes very kindly donated by local businesses and individuals.

Groups of students also organised: bag packing at the supermarket; several cake sales in school; a raffle; ice cream sales at school sports day; a bucket collection; a non-uniform day; and sale of refreshments at the school concerts in the summer and Christmas.

Additionally many local benefactors contributed directly to the fund including the Gwernyfed Rugby Club and Black Mountain Lions. Thanks have also gone to Bernard Price on behalf of the Price Family Brynteg and Rob Meadmore on behalf of Brightwells Auctioneers, Hay-on-Wye.

Felicity Jones representing last year’s Pupil Leadership Team, took time out of packing for Durham University, to come into school to officially handover the new Peugeot Boxer minibus to pupils.

The school now has two minibuses which are available for community groups and schools to hire. There is the Ford Transit minibus (17 seater) and also the new Peugeot Boxer minibus (which is either 17-seater or 15-seater plus one wheelchair. This minibus is accessible with a wheelchair ramp). The school provides the minibuses at cost to community and voluntary groups and further information can be obtained from the school office on 01497 847445 or the school website.
