A dentist from Sennybridge is currently taking part in a once-in-a-lifetime international adventure with nearly 500 UK Scouts at the 16th World Scout Moot in Portugal.
Jamie Everett is among 9,000 Scouts from across the globe, aged 18 to 25, who have gathered for the event, which began in Tejo Park, Lisbon on July 25 and will conclude in Porto.
Over the course of the Moot, Jamie is immersing himself in Portuguese communities and culture, with activities designed to encourage cross-cultural exchange, understanding, and friendship.
One of the highlights is a four-day expedition, during which participants team up with Scouts from other countries to explore one of 100 routes through remote parts of Portugal. Afterwards, they reconvene at a camp base in Ovar for a packed schedule of international activities, skills development and cultural learning, before a final celebration marks the end of the experience.
Speaking ahead of the trip, Jamie said: “I have learnt every flag from around the world and will use this to make connections. As part of my Moot experience, I'm going on an expedition to Madeira - it's going to be amazing.”
This year’s World Scout Moot carries the theme ‘Engage’, encouraging young people to connect with others and their communities in meaningful ways. The event aims to equip participants with the experiences, skills and motivation to make a positive impact on the world around them.
The opportunity has been made possible with support from the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.
Chief Scout Dwayne Fields wished Jamie and the rest of the UK delegation well before they departed, saying: “A massive good luck to Jamie and all the UK Scouts who are at the World Scout Moot.
“This is an amazing opportunity to discover yourself and the world around us, while exploring how you can create meaningful change. The true international spirit of Scouting will shine through, with so many chances to learn from other Scouts around the world.
“I know each UK Scout attending will grab the opportunity to create memories, friendships and skills to last a lifetime.”
