Last August a fantastic record was achieved by Llandefalle shearer Lloyd Rees, who sheared an amazing 902 lambs in nine hours to become the British Shearing Champion.

The event took place at Blaenbwch Farm near Builth Wells, by kind permission of Rob and Tracy Powell.

Starting at 5am Lloyd sheared 203 in the first two-hour run. He then tallied 174, 171, and 177 in the next three runs, before bagging the record with 177 sheep sheared in the final stint.

Shearing on average just over 100 sheep an hour, Lloyd broke the previous record by 21 sheep - a record that had only been set a week earlier.

This year at the Royal Welsh Show cheques were presented to the lucky organisations that Lloyd wanted donations to go to - the Welsh Air Ambulance and Parkinson's UK, via the South Powys Parkinson’s Support Group.

The latter was in memory of Lloyd’s beloved grandmother whose last years were made more challenging with Parkinson’s. She sadly died in hospital shortly before Lloyd set the record.

Despite the occasional shower there was a large crowd to cheer for the record-breaker.

The presentation was on the Sheep Shearing Stage and the Parkinson’s Group Leader, Clare Tipton received a fantastic total of just over £10,000 from Lloyd Rees, as did the Welsh Air Ambulance representative.
