Many schools across Powys have already announced that they will be closed tomorrow due to the weather conditions caused by Storm Goretti.

Brecon High School has announced it will be closed tomorrow.

In an open letter to parents, carers and pupils, Headteacher Mr R. Edwards said: “Due to the severe weather warning for Storm Goretti, Powys County Council’s decision to suspend school transport and the latest travel advice from Dyfed-Powys Police, Brecon High School will be closed tomorrow to ensure the safety of pupil and staff.”

Crickhowell High School will also be closed tomorrow.

Mr Yeoman has told pupils and parents: “Following discussion with our local primary school headteachers, and reflecting the decision taken by most high schools across Powys, we have made the decision to close the school tomorrow. This decision is based on the latest weather information, our ability to staff the school safely, and the fact that our area falls within the current amber weather warning.

“For some of our staff, it has already been a challenging drive home tonight, which reinforces the need to prioritise safety.”

Gwernyfed High School will be closed tomorrow.

The school has said: “Due to the severe weather warning for Storm Goretti and Powys County Council’s decision to suspend school transport, Gwernyfed High School will be closed tomorrow for the safety of pupils and staff.”

Ysgol Calon Cymru has also announced its closure for tomorrow.

The school has said: “Due to the weather warning currently in place for Storm Goretti, and following discussion with the Chair of Governors, Ysgol Calon Cymru will be closed to learners tomorrow, Friday 9 January 2026.

“The forecast indicates heavy snowfall and rain across parts of the county, and there will be no school transport operating tomorrow. This decision has been taken in the interests of learner and staff safety.”
