A shopping scheme is helping older and less mobile residents in Hay-on-Wye stay independent and connected to their community.
Hay & District Dial-a-Ride launched its Shopping Buddies scheme in April 2026, combining accessible transport with practical assistance for people who find shopping alone increasingly difficult.
The charity said shopping trips offered more than the chance to buy groceries, giving residents an opportunity to meet familiar faces, enjoy a chat and maintain valuable social contact.
The scheme has recently expanded to include Fridays alongside its existing Tuesday service. Assisted shopping opportunities have also been extended to Talgarth, allowing more people across the area to benefit.
For some residents, particularly those living alone or in rural communities, a visit to the shops can be an important part of their week.
Lesley Johnston, chief executive of Hay & District Dial-a-Ride, said: "Something as ordinary as going shopping can become a real challenge when you're older, less mobile or no longer able to drive. It's easy to underestimate how important these everyday outings are.
"Our Shopping Buddies scheme is about helping people retain their independence and confidence, while enjoying the social side of getting out and about. Sometimes a little practical support can make an enormous difference.
"We're delighted to be extending the service and would love to hear from anyone who feels they, or someone they know, might benefit."
The project is funded by the Social Value Fund (SVF) and forms part of the charity's wider work to tackle rural isolation and help people remain active and connected.
With limited public transport in many surrounding villages, the scheme aims to support residents who might otherwise struggle to get out and about.
