LLANDRINDOD Wells high school has been branded 'unsatisfactory' by education inspectors who have placed it in special measures.

The high school was found to be under performing at the crucial key stage four GCSE level and the quality of teaching has been described as 'variable' and marking was also criticised.

A Letter was sent to all parents and carers explaining the outcome of the inspection before it was officially published on Tuesday, December 9.

Powys County Council called the inspection disappointing and said the school will be supported by officials from the ERW regional education consortium for South West and Mid Wales.

Other failings included insufficient progress in acquiring knowledge, understanding and skills, failing to develop extended writing skills and in a minority of classes lessons failed to challenge pupils well enough.

The school was also criticised for not making sufficient progress to meet statutory literacy and numeracy frameworks and marking was dismissed as 'cursory' and teachers' comments 'superficial'.

There were however steady improvements in key stage three, a 'significant' improvement in attendance and the 'enthusiastic and well motivated' attitudes to learning of most pupils in the school.
