High in the Black Mountains, above Crickhowell, Spring arrives later than in many other places. The signs of Spring include the return of the nesting house martins, the first cut of the grass, the vibrant leaf greens of the trees and the National Gardens Scheme Open Days at Nant y Bedd.

This year Spring has been holding back and visitors to Nant y Bedd for the open days on May 14 and 15 will have a chance of seeing the garden in its early stages of growth. Tulips, honesty, marsh marigolds are taking over from the last of the daffodils. The ferns are at their loveliest as they start to unfurl their fronds. The Japanese Acer’s red leaves are filling out, with the copper beech not too far behind.

Down by the forest, a wood sculpture should be finished in time for an unveiling on the Saturday, and further along the crocodile awaits unwary visitors.

Nant y Bedd (www.nantybedd.com) is situated 4.5 miles up the road towards the Grwyne Fawr reservoir. Follow the Yellow NGS signs from Crickhowell. Opening times are 11am to 5pm on both days. Entrance is £5 (children free) and all proceeds go to the NGS charities (www.ngs.org.uk/what-we-do/who-we-support.aspx). Teas and homemade cakes will be available, as will plants and garden accessories.
