Councillors will be asked to commit to encouraging women to run for political roles and assist them in doing so today.

Independent Group councillor Liam Fitzpatrick is asking Powys County Council to throw its support behind women in politics at today’s full council meeting which is taking place on International Women’s Day.

Cllr Fitzpatrick, a cabinet member, has brought forward his notice of motion, to encourage women to run for roles in politics, in recognition of 2018 being the anniversary of some women in Britain being given the right to vote.

The motion says: "That in celebration of the centenary of women gaining the vote, this council recognises the incredible contribution women have made to politics in Powys, Wales and the United Kingdom since time immemorial.

"This council will continue to actively encourage women to run for political roles in the future and will strive to assist them in any way it can."

The motion has been seconded by Conservative councillor Amanda Jenner who told the council:"It is quite fitting the motion has come today, International Women's Day. I'm a feminist and I hope you and male councillors are too".

Last year Powys council elected its first ever female leader, Independent Group councillor Rosemarie Harris who represents Llangynidr.
