AS many as three secondary schools in Powys could close, the county council has announced.

Powys County Council's cabinet member for schools Arwel Jones said a review, carried out by accountants PWC, made it clear some schools must close.

He warned: "The review provides us with clear evidence that we need to reduce the number of secondary schools, sixth-forms and change the way we deliver Welsh medium education to make the most of our resources and deliver a service fit for the 21st century."

The review is understood to have recommended the closure of up to three secondary schools as well as some additional sixth forms. It also recommends changing the way the council delivers Welsh medium education.

At present there are 12 secondary schools in Powys but the council hasn't identified which schools could be closed.

Cllr Jones added: "The findings are not the end of the process but the start of an intensive period of work that aims to provide a secondary school structure that can deliver the very best for learners of Powys.

"We don't underestimate the task facing the council, considering the closure of a school, particularly a secondary school, is not to be undertaken lightly. But, we have to respond to falling school pupil numbers and dwindling budgets to ensure our young learners have the best possible educational opportunities."

The cabinet will consider the PWC report at its Tuesday, January 27 meeting. Cllr Jones said should the recommendations be accepted specific proposals will be developed for individual schools.
