THE family of a man who died in a crash on the A40 near the Powys and Monmouthshire border have paid tribute to him.

Robert Watkins, who was 65 and from the Abergavenny area, died in a single vehicle collision on the A40 between Abergavenny and Glangrwyney, known locally as Brecon Road, shortly before 2am on Wednesday.

Gwent Police issued a tribute on behalf of the family which said: "A much loved family man who lived for farming and his children, known to all as ‘Spuddy’. His loss has left his family and friends heartbroken."

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed until shortly after 9am and police had advised drivers heading to the Royal Welsh Show, from the Gwent area, and further east, to use the A4077 through Gilwern.

Officers are requesting any motorists using the road between 1am and 1.55am to please check any dash cam footage that may provide further information that will assist officers with their enquiries.
