THE returning officer for Powys has urged residents to use their votes in this week’s elections.

Elections are being held in 56 of the 73 Powys County Council wards involving 158 candidates.

Returning Officer Jeremy Patterson, said: "On Thursday, May 4, voters will have the opportunity to vote for who they think is the best candidate to represent their community on the council for the next five years.

"Who you vote for is entirely between you and the ballot paper but, if you are eligible to take part in these elections, I would encourage you to use your vote so your council is truly representative of the wishes of your community.

"The council delivers important services such as social care, education and bin collections so it is important you have your say on who your council representative is by using your right to vote."

The count for the county council elections in Powys will take place the following day on Friday, May 5 at the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd.

There is also still time to register to vote in the June 8 general election which will determine who forms the next UK government.

The registration deadline closes on May 22. You can register to vote at https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or in Welsh at https://www.gov.uk/cofrestru-i-bleidleisio
