PROTESTERS from Breconshire are among those who have blockaded the BBC’s Broadcasting House headquarters as a week of action over climate change continues in London.
Extinction Rebellion activists have been pictured outside the building in Portland Place, central London, holding a giant banner that reads "This is an emergency".
Other banners state "Planet Before Profit" and a bilingual Welsh and English banner reads "Gweithredwch Nawr Act Now". The protest has been organised by Extinction Rebellion groups from Wales and Herefordshire.
It is thought at least 100 people are outside the building and they include activist Sian Cox, from Llangors, near Brecon, who has superglued herself to the BBC’s headquarters.
Protesters from across Powys have been involved in the movement’s actions in London that are now in their fifth day. The group says it wants recognition that the planet faces a climate emergency.
Peter Barker, from Llangammarch Wells, is part of the protest outside the BBC’s headquarters.
He said Extinction Rebellion believe the BBC has failed to fully inform its audiences on the issue of climate change. Speeches, which Extinction Rebellion is calling "wartime style emergency broadcasts", are also being made by activists outside the building
Mr Barker said: "We are sat outside Broadcasting House with other Welsh rebels and farmers and holding an alternative broadcast today.
"We have got people superglued to the front door including Sian Cox who is being guarded by about half a dozen police officers."
The protest began shortly before 8am this morning said Mr Barker who criticised the broadcaster’s approach to reporting climate change.
"They are being quite shameful in downplaying the emergency we face. The BBC ought to let people know the existential threat we face."
He also said by allowing lobbyists from the oil industry to appear on its platforms the BBC is "downplaying" issues related to climate change.A spokesman from the Extinction Rebellion Group was a panelist on last night's BBC Question Time programme.
