David Chadwick MP, Jane Dodds MS and local county councillor Corinna Kenyon-Wade will host the meeting at Knighton Community Centre on Monday 28 September, with doors opening at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

The public meeting will take place at Knighton Community Centre, Bowling Green Lane, Knighton, LD7 1DR. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The meeting follows Powys Teaching Health Board's decision to proceed to formal consultation on its Better Together proposals for the future of health services across the county.

Under the proposals, Panpwnton Ward at Knighton Hospital would not reopen, meaning inpatient hospital beds would not return to the town. The five interim reablement beds currently at Cottage View Residential Home on the Knighton Hospital site would become fully integrated into Cottage View.

Residents in the Knighton and Presteigne area requiring community inpatient care would instead travel to Llandrindod Wells under one option, or Newtown or Brecon under the other.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have warned that the impact on the area could be compounded by proposed changes at Llandrindod Wells Hospital, which many residents in east Radnorshire rely on.

One option would remove community inpatient beds from Llandrindod Wells altogether, while one of the urgent-care options would also see its Minor Injury Unit close.

The Knighton meeting is the latest in a series of public meetings organised by the Welsh Liberal Democrats across Powys, following large turnouts in communities including Llanidloes, Welshpool, Ystradgynlais, Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells.

David Chadwick, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe, said: "People in Knighton and Presteigne deserve to know exactly what these proposals could mean for healthcare in their communities.

"The Health Board's plans confirm that Panpwnton Ward would not reopen. At the same time, services at Llandrindod that people in this area may increasingly be expected to rely upon are themselves under threat.

"This is exactly why we are holding these meetings. We want people to be able to hear what is being proposed, ask questions and make their voices heard.

"We've already seen enormous concern about these plans across Powys, and I would encourage everyone in Knighton, Presteigne and the surrounding communities to come along."

Welsh Liberal Democrat Senedd Member for Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd Jane Dodds said: "In a rural area like this, you cannot look at individual hospitals in isolation. Removing a service in one town has consequences for patients and families across a huge area.

"People in Knighton and Presteigne are already facing the prospect that inpatient beds will never return to Knighton after they have been mothballed for several years. They now also face uncertainty over services in Llandrindod Wells.

"Communities should have a genuine choice over the future of their health services, rather than simply being asked to choose between different versions of cuts and centralisation."
