Brecon Pet and Garden Centre on High Street is ran by Kate and Brian Popsys who have decided to retire from the shop after nine years of ownership.

The shop sells plants, seeds, animal feed, gardening equipment, dog accessories, treats and more, but will stop trading on Wednesday, 30 September.

Talking to The Brecon & Radnor Express, Kate said: “We want to thank all of our lovely customers, old and new, for your continued support over our nine year period.

“We feel sad that no one has come forward to buy it. It’s a prime position and after fifty, sixty years the shop will no longer be a pet store, which is a shame but it’s time to move on.”

Kate and Brian said the plan was always to retire whilst they can enjoy spending time with grandchildren, on holiday and carrying out work on their home.

Sadly, with no one coming forward to buy the shop, Brecon will be left with another empty shop as three independent businesses shut down this month.

Despite the plan retire, Brian and Kate say that the ongoing works in Brecon, with the new pedestrian heavy layout of the town, was a contributing factor to them closing the store. Work is set to begin this winter outside the store and will lead to no roadside parking near the store, which would have made deliveries very difficult for them, as well as customers carrying heavy bags of seed to their cars, thus reducing trade.

The couple, who have helped keep gardens growing and pets fed across the area, are glad to be moving on to a new chapter.
