A charity night in Brecon has raised more than £2,000 for a disaster relief fund following catastrophic flooding in Nepal.

Brecon Dhampus Twinning Association held the event at Zeera restaurant last week, raising £2,193 for the Prime Minister of Nepal’s Disaster Relief Fund.

The appeal follows a devastating flood disaster in northern Nepal in August, after what is thought to be a glacial collapse triggered a huge surge of water along the Nepal-China border. At least 1,400 people have died in Nepal and more than 6,000 remain missing, according to the latest reports.

The event was organised by Councillor David Meredith, who thanked Zeera, The New Gurkha Inn in Talgarth and Mmm Mitho in Brecon for their support.

He said he was “overcome by the generosity of the people of Brecon” towards the appeal.

The Brecon Dhampus Twinning Association is also working with Brecon Rotary Club, which raised a further £3,000 through a street collection in the town.

A quiz night will be held at The Foundry on Monday, September 28, at 8pm, with proceeds going towards the appeal.

The charity will also have a stall at Brecon with Bells On in the Market Hall on Sunday, November 29, with all proceeds going to the disaster fund.

Brecon has strong links with Nepal, having been twinned with the village of Dhampus in Kaski District since 2019. This came from Brecon’s long-standing connection with the Gurkha community, with Gurkha soldiers having been based in Brecon since the 1970s and the annual Gurkha Freedom Parade taking place in the town.

The charity night means more than £5,000 has now been raised locally for the disaster appeal through the two events.
