An 18-year-old former Brecon pupil has become a Welsh national champion after completing one of the country’s toughest triathlons.
Lilwen Banning, who attended Ysgol y Bannau, Brecon High School and Crickhowell Sixth Form, completed Ironman Wales on Sunday, September 13.
The event involved a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and a 42.2km marathon.
Lilwen finished in 14 hours, 46 minutes and 36 seconds to become the Female Welsh National Long Distance Triathlon Under-20 Champion for 2026.
The 18-year-old had only recently completed her A-levels at Crickhowell Sixth Form, achieving three A*s and two As.
And there was little time to rest after completing the Ironman. The following day, Lilwen travelled to Bristol University to begin a degree in civil engineering.
She is a member of Brecon Triathlon Club and thanked the club for its support and encouragement during her development as a triathlete.
She also thanked her family, friends, club members and everyone who supported her during her training and on race day.
