Year 5 and 6 pupils from Ysgol Golwg Pen y Fan recently presented Brecon Foodbank with over £300, which they raised through their ‘Veggie Loop Cafe’.
A school project based around food saw the pupils each take a survey home to find out the most popular fruit and vegetables. Using their findings, they found out that the most popular were Blackberries, Beetroot, Pumpkin and Carrot. They then made a selection of healthy products and sweet treats to sell.
The children then set up a cafe at the school, and following a class vote, with eyes down, no cheating, the name of the cafe was decided as the ‘Veggie Loop Cafe’.
The pupils sold their goods to parents and members of the local community, serving and counting the money. The children raised £308, and decided that they would like to donate the money to Brecon Foodbank.
On Friday, 28 November, the pupils walked from the school to Brecon Foodbank to meet volunteers, find out about the work they do, and to also donate their hard earned money.
Tracy from Brecon Foodbank learned all about the Veggie Loop Cafe and all the hardwork year 5 and 6 had done. Following the donation, Tracy said: “We are extremely grateful to years 5 and 6, for their amazing donation of £308.00.
“It was great to hear from the students about their community cafe and how hard they all worked to make this event a success. Thank you to everyone involved, we are unable to do what we do without the help and support from our very generous community.”
After being asked if they would do it again? The children responded with a resounding “Yes!”
The food bank helps those in crisis, and is open on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. For more information, please go to: https://brecon.foodbank.org.uk
