A mother from Ystradgynlais has proved “it’s never too late” to return to learning after graduating with First Class Honours from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David - 16 years after she last studied.

Joanne Wozencroft, 44, completed a BA (Hons) in Early Years Education and Care, gaining Early Years Practitioner Status while continuing to work and care for her family. Her achievement comes after a challenging year marked by new health circumstances affecting her daughter.

“Returning to academia after a long break came with more challenges than I ever anticipated,” she said. “But the support networks at UWTSD made a huge difference. By persevering, I hope I’ve become a role model for my daughter, showing that even through adversity, it’s possible to flourish when you have the right support around you.”

Ms Wozencroft was inspired to return to university by her passion for inclusive practice and sustainability, developed through years of supporting children and families. Encouraged by a former manager, she chose UWTSD for its strong reputation in helping mature students flourish.

Joining directly at Level 6, she balanced study, work and home life while rediscovering academic learning. She credits lecturers, peers and support services - including Peer Assisted Learning mentors, library tutorials and wellbeing support - with helping her rebuild confidence.

Her degree also allowed her to explore her interest in outdoor and sustainable education, including research inspired by the John Muir Award. At home, she even transformed her family garden into a space where nature and learning meet.

“This course has transformed me professionally and personally,” she said. “It’s reignited my love of learning and shown me that it’s never too late to achieve your goals.”

She is now continuing her studies through the university’s Post Compulsory Education and Training programme, with hopes of becoming a lecturer and leading future work.
