ON Saturday November 12, Brecon ladies travelled to Penarth with a squad of 12 for their sixth league game of the season.

With Penarth being a few places ahead of Brecon in the division one league table, Brecon were expecting a tough match despite having a strong team on the field. The game got off to a steady start, with both teams testing the opponents defence and being awarded short corners for their efforts.

Brecon’s defence proved strong and determined, and coupled with some bold saves from Megan Thomas in goal, the score entering half time remained at 0-0.

After a half time team talk, Penarth came back strong and goal-hungry, and Brecon found themselves playing a defensive game. The Brecon girls remained strong and resolute, and continued to defend every shot and short corner that Penarth presented.

A well deserved break came from a ball from Beth Wood in midfield to Hannah Mills on the forward line, and Brecon found themselves in a their attacking quarter. A Penarth foot which obstructed a direct shot at goal from Beth Wood saw a penalty flick awarded to the Brecon side.

Beth Wood stepped up to take it, and remaining calm and collected, she placed the ball in the right hand corner of the goal to bring the score to 1-0 to Brecon. The remaining 10 minutes of the game was fraught and tense, but Brecon managed to hold on to their lead and finish the game triumphant.
