This prestigious fixture is a celebration of the school’s commitment to cricket and a proud moment for the community, showcasing top-tier women’s sport on the historic 1st XI pitch.
Glamorgan’s Gemma Porter reacts to win against Sussex Sharks and looks ahead to Lancashire Thunder fixture in Brecon.
Adding to the excitement, current Year 13 pupil Eve—recently selected for the Glamorgan Women’s Team—if chosen for the squad, will be taking to the field not only as a county player, but on her own school grounds, with the full support of Christ College cheering her on.
Set against the stunning backdrop of Bannau Brycheiniog, the cricket fields at Christ College are anchored by the historic 100-year-old pavilion. Since the school’s foundation in 1541, these grounds have hosted hundreds of fixtures, welcoming teams such as the West Indies and Glamorgan on their 1st XI pitch.
Today, Christ College offers a comprehensive cricket program for both boys and girls throughout the academic year. With six boys’ teams and five girls’ teams across all year groups, players compete against both independent and state schools and take part in all national schools’ cricket competitions.
During the winter months, weekly coaching sessions are held in the sports hall with indoor nets and bowling machines. While in the summer term, pupils practice up to four times a week and play regular fixtures against regional teams, county teams, Glamorgan, and local clubs. A week-long Cricket festival is held at the school at the end of the summer term for all boys' and girls' teams. Teams from England and Wales play in the festival throughout the week and the 1st XI host the annual fixture against the MCC.
Christ College has a team of fully qualified coaches, with English Cricket Board and Glamorgan Cricket coaches offering weekly one-to-one sessions for their elite players. These players are also given the opportunity to play at the highest level, due to strong links with Glamorgan Cricket Club and Cardiff Metropolitan University.
The school offers an Elite Player Pathway (EPP), designed to offer extra support to aspiring athletes across all age groups. The EPP helps pupils to balance their sporting commitments with their education, ensuring that they remain focused and on track, whilst aiming to reach their own personal goals within their chosen sport.
CCB pupil Eve said: “It is fantastic to see the growth of girls’ cricket at all ability levels at the school. Every female cricket player is given the opportunity to train and develop throughout the academic year in 1:1 or group sessions.”
Pupils at Christ College have also been selected for the 2025 Glamorgan Women’s Emerging Player Pathway Programme, U14 East Wales training squad, and Herefordshire Boys and Girls County teams. There has also been recent success with the U13 and U15 Girls teams, who have qualified for the Regional Indoor Finals in Wales by winning their local regional tournament.
To support the growing enthusiasm for cricket, the school has invested in upgrading its facilities, including the installation of a new six-lane outdoor net provision. Dedicated to Colin W. Kleiser in recognition of his outstanding contribution as Master of Cricket, the new provision marks an exciting chapter for the sport at Christ College. With these enhanced facilities, cricket is flourishing — and pupils are eager to practice, play, and compete as they look ahead to an exciting 2025 season.
