BOTH Brecon Cricket Club teams came up winners in their double header against Ebbw Vale CC over the weekend with the first team running out overwhelming winners by 10 wickets at home whilst the second team had a considerably more difficult game at Ebbw Vale but managed to come away victors by 62 runs.

The first team game, sponsored by Somerset County Sports, was one of the most one sided witnessed in Brecon for a long time with Ebbw Vale batting first being shot out for 37 with Sam Williams taking 5 for 20 and Tom Jones 5 for 17 decimating the visiting batting.

In reply for Brecon, opening batsmen James Hudson (20no) and Matt Williams (15no) knocked the runs off in four overs to put an early end to proceedings. The only disappointment of the day was that this was James Hudson’s last game for the club in what has been a short but massively influential period for him.

Away at Ebbw Vale, the second team had a sterner task but managed to collect 18 points to maintain their lead at the top of the League.

Batting first they totalled 269 for 8 with brothers Will and Tom Trumper leading the way with 79 and 60 runs respectively in aggressively struck knocks. Mark Waldeck chipped in with 23 and Terry Dickson made a well constructed 39no in the later overs aided by a late flush from Derek Osborne 16no the innings ended in a commanding position.

When Ebbw Vale batted their innings revolved around a second wicket stand of 136 between Yasir Iqbal (98) and Dylon Morgan (36), assisted by some poor catching from Brecon that saw numerous chances spilled during the stand, as the innings made rapid progress.

The experienced pair of captain John Cooke (2 for 38) and Gwyn Price (2 for 31) was needed to change the game in Brecon’s favour and once the break though was made, the innings stalled and a comfortable 69 run was recorded.

It was however very much a case of statistics not telling the whole story because after 25 overs the game could have gone either way.

This week the first team are at home to Sully whilst the second team make the long trip to The Vale.
