Brecon Corries were knocked out of the Dragon Signs FAW Amateur Trophy on penalties after a goalless first qualifying round tie against Penlan at the Rich Field.

The Ardal South East side dominated for large spells and created the better chances but couldn’t find a way past Penlan goalkeeper Marcus Collins, who produced a number of key stops before the Swansea outfit triumphed 3-1 in the shootout.

Corries nearly made the dream start in the opening minute when Jay Hughes tested Collins after meeting a cross from the right. Penlan responded through captain Luke Edwards, whose near-post strike rippled the side netting on six minutes.

Corey Evans forced Collins into action with a 25-yard free-kick, and Hughes’ close-range follow-up was also kept out. The visiting keeper remained busy, denying veteran forward Paul Keddle before Dale Evans struck the crossbar from a free-kick on 37 minutes.

Penlan were reduced to 10 men just moments earlier when Liam Logan was shown two yellow cards in quick succession. Despite the numerical advantage, Corries couldn’t find a breakthrough before the interval.

Craig Evans was twice denied by Collins early in the second half, with Jack Biggs seeing a rebound effort blocked on the line. Evans thought he had broken the deadlock on 56 minutes with a neat lob, only for a Penlan defender to clear off the line.

The visitors sat deep in the second half, relying on the counter, while Corries pressed forward. Biggs was again denied before heading over from a corner, and later failed to convert a backheeled attempt from close range. Craig Evans struck the side netting late on, and Kian McCarthy also went close at the far post.

With the tie goalless after 90 minutes, it went to penalties. Penlan netted three of their four spot-kicks, while Dale Evans, Craig Evans and Keddle were all off target for the hosts.

Damien Daniels’ side will look to bounce back next Saturday when they return to Ardal South East action at home to Blaenavon Blues – a fixture that coincides with Brecon Jazz Festival weekend.
