Cornelly 2 Brecon Corries 4.
THE Corries travelled to Cornelly last weekend with a few key players missing but with others returning to the squad.
Confidence was high after some great performances and results, they were looking to record their first ever win away against Cornelly.
They started brightly putting the Cornelly back four under pressure but that was soon disrupted when Brian Keddle went off injured after five mins. There was further disruption not long after when his replacement Lee Brooks went off injured with a very nasty looking knee injury.
It was amongst all of this commotion that they found themselves 1-0 down due to the only lapse of concentration by the defence in the whole game. That seemed to be the spark they needed to get back into the game and soon found themselves on level terms through Rob Chesters.
Soon after, the visitors found themselves back in front after Damien Daniels latched on to a Gareth Aplin flick-on and tapped the ball home over the keepers head from 30 yards.
With Cornelly in disarray, the Corries continued to cause them all sorts of problems and their lead was further increased when Damien Daniels scored again after some great work down the right from Gareth Aplin. Matthew Turrall made it 4-1 from a Gareth Aplin corner, who was involved in all four goals.
The Corries knew at half time they would still have to keep up the work rate in order to take advantage of the situation. Offensively they failed to keep up those levels but individually and collectively as a team they defended with great discipline and desire and got their just rewards. Apart from a free kick scored by Cornelly their half chances were limited.
A disciplined and well deserved three points for the Brecon side.
Player manager Damien Daniels said: "The saying ’football is a game of two halves’ could not be more apt when describing this game. The first half we were not at our best but we were clinical and made our chances count. In the second half we took our foot off the gas and struggled to play with the same intensity we’ve become accustomed to. The attitude and desire from everyone in the squad is superb."
The Corries home fixture against Porthcawl this coming Saturday has been postponed due to keeper and Captain Stephen Price and Joe Sissions representing South Wales in the UEFA Regions Cup final in Newtown. They represent Brecon and South Wales who are bidding for a win which will see them travel to Europe to compete against the continents best.
