AFTER taking up a coaching position to save her daughters football dream a Llandrindod Wells woman has been nominated for an award.
Julie Christopher first took up the coaching position with the Llandrindod Wells Junior Girls Football Club when her daughter Katie’s team were left without a coach.
Julie, who works as a civil-servant for the Welsh Government said: "Katie came home and said there was no one to take over the coaching and she was desperate to keep playing."
Julie, who had no interest in football before taking up the post six seasons ago, was nominated by daughter Katie, who now plays in goal for Aberystwyth Ladies team, for the FAW People’s Award in this years Welsh Community Awards presented by McDonalds.
Julie said she thought the email she received from the FAW was spam: "I asked Katie after receiving the email and she just sat and grinned at me. She is very proud of what I’ve done but I almost feel guilty for being nominated as she does so much to help with the club herself."
The 44-year-old said that she was a qualified hockey coach before taking up football and said: "I just used the skills I had picked up coaching hockey to start with and as time went on the number of girls playing football at the club picked up, and I became a lot more interested in the game."
Not only does Julie coach but also does the admin as well as arranging transport to matches and liaising with the leagues they play in.
Julie said: "I intend to carry on coaching, for the forceable future anyway. It’s not just about helping the kids out, it’s what I get back from it as well. It is a lot of commitment but I get so much back from it and have real friendships with the girls.
"I also suffer from Fibromyalgia and I think giving up football would be giving into the disease. I won’t let it win. I won’t let it beat me."
Julie, who is also mum to qualified football coach Becky, 19, said her husband Garry "wasn’t impressed at all" that his wife and two children were so interested in football.
