Dale Evans converted a 97th-minute penalty to give Brecon Corries a thrilling 4-3 home win over Abergavenny Town in the Ardal League South East at the weekend.
Joel Evans (2) and Jay Ryan Hughes had netted earlier goals for the Chisels who made it three wins in a row to move up to fifth in the league table.
Manager Damien Daniels felt Corries controlled the first half with Dale Evans and Steve Goodwin outstanding at the back. And Hughes deservedly put them in front when Joel Evans flicked the ball on for him to score via a post. But they were slow starters after the break and Ben Brooks put Abergavenny level.
Two goal in three minutes from Joel Evans then put Corries in the driving seat but the visitors staged a late rally. Brooks got his second on 88 minutes and former Builth Wells striker, Rudi Griffiths looked to have salvaged a point for Abergavenny in the first minute of stoppage time with both goals coming from set pieces.
But there was still plenty of drama to come as Abergavenny’s George Clarke collected a second yellow card for a poor challenge on the impressive Jay Ryan Hughes. Corries’ Luke Roughley and Abergavenny keeper Ashley Morris also saw red before Dale Evans kept his cool to slot home the penalty despite attempts from Abergavenny to delay the spot-kick.
Corries supporters went on to enjoy another thriller on Sunday as their youth team defeated Cwmbran Celtic Under 21s 7-5 in the FAW National Reserve League South East. Corries raced into a four goal lead in the opening 19 minutes through Ossian Wiltshire (2), Jay Ryan Hughes and Jamie Williams. Cwmbran hit back in the second half with three goals of their own before Williams netted his second for the hosts. Cwmbran then scored a further two to level the scores but late goals from Craig Evans and Hughes sealed it for Corries.
ARDAL LEAGUE NORTH EAST
New signing Arwyn Walby made an immediate impact on his debut by scoring a penalty and providing two assists as Llandrindod Wells extended their unbeaten run to three in the Ardal league North East with a 3-2 victory at Mid Wales rivals, Kerry. Walby, who has signed from Westfields, soon made his mark setting Robbie Nicholls up for his first goal of the term before increasing the lead from the spot after being tripped.
Luke Mumford pulled one back for Kerry with a penalty two minutes before half-time but Will Cleaton regained Llandrindod’s two-goal advantage after the break with the best goal of the afternoon.
Substitute Daryl Watt snatched a second for Kerry with seven minutes remaining but Llandrindod stood firm to record their first win in four in the league.
Radnor Valley are also unbeaten in three after a much improved performance from the previous week led to an entertaining 3-3 draw at Llanfair United. Tomos Jones gave Llanfair the lead from close range after a free-kick on the byline but Jack Clarke soon had the Goats back on level terms when Joey Price drilled the ball across following a short corner.
Dan Fenwick Lofts headed his first goal for the Goats from Joey Price’s near post corner but sloppy defending allowed Harvey Morris to equalise for Llanfair before half-time. Joey Price edged Radnor in front again early in the second half with his third goal in as many games from a sublime Jack Clarke pass but Morris netted his second for Llanfair rifling the ball in off the bar. Radnor camped in the Llanfair half for the remainder of the game forcing a succession of corners and almost grabbed a winner when Ieuan Price’s header grazed the top of the bar with the last play of the day.
Knighton Town crashed to their first defeat of the season in the league, beaten 6-0 at leaders, Llanuwchllyn who showed why they are title favourites. Knighton, who started the day second in the table, were quietly confident making the trip but it did not go to plan. Former Bangor City and Chirk striker, Dale Davies gave Llanuwchllyn an early lead and Tomos Roberts grabbed a crucial second in first half stoppage time. Knighton felt they could get something from the game in the second half but Joe Vaughan increased the home side’s lead on the hour and the outstanding Davies netted his second soon after. Meilir Williams popped up with his now customary goal before Gwydion Roberts completed a miserable day for the shell-shocked Radnor Robins.
Builth Wells went down 3-0 at home against Llanrhaeadr and have taken just one point from the last six outings which has dragged them into a relegation battle. There was not that much to separate the sides but the visitors were clinical when it mattered. The Bulls, who included four 16 year olds, made a bright start with Harry Edwards showing up well but Will Roberts-Morris fired Llanrhaeadr ahead. The impressive Will Howard headed a second from a Jacob Edwards cross and Billy Clarke added a third in first half stoppage time to virtually seal the points. Builth defender,Lee James was booked late on and received a second yellow card after the final whistle which had no bearing on the result but rules him out of this weekend’s local derby at Radnor Valley.
Only two teams are to be relegated this time and Builth have a four-point buffer on the bottom two, Lex XI and Llangollen Town, who also lost at the weekend. Lex were beaten 1-0 at Corwen where Tom Weyman bagged the all-important goal and two goals from William Cooke could not save Llangollen from a 4-2 defeat at Penycae who scored through Zac Davies (2), Ben Williams and Josh Mazzarella.
Cefn Albion, who have had a few indifferent results of late, beat Bow Street 5-2 thanks to Alex Williams (2), Callum Smith, Dion Gibbins and Callum Mannion while Dolgellau won 1-0 at Rhos Aelwyd with Gerwyn Williams netting the only goal early in the game.
WATSON FINANCIAL MID WALES LEAGUE (SOUTH)
Talgarth Town dropped precious points in the Watson Financial Mid Wales League (South) title race for the second game in a row as they were held to a 2-2 draw at ever-improving St Harmon. The Royals will be disappointed having led twice through Grzes Chodnicki and Gavin Perry only to see Harry Powell and Arran Lloyd level. Lloyd’s strike came right on the 90-minute mark to extend St Harmon’s recent unbeaten league run to five.
Hay St Marys remain top, extending their own unbeaten run to eight with a narrow 1-0 verdict over Penybont United. Topscorer Ricky Lynes maintained his form with the only goal - his 15th in the league this time - from Darren Horrigan’s through ball after 16 minutes.
Brecon FC kept the pressure on the leaders as they avenged their only league defeat of the term at Rhayader Town Development by beating the Red Kites 4-1 at home. The Stags had to come from behind after Owain Rowlands had given Rhayader, who were playing with the wind, a half-time lead. Nathan Jones levelled with his first goal of the term five minutes into the second half from an Aaron Mills corner and Brecon went on to boss proceedings from there. Owain Powell-Jones put Brecon ahead when Fraser McCauley flicked on a long Scott Phillips throw-in. Powell-Jones then turned provider heading on a long kick from keeper Declan Gaydon to put Mills in before Tristan Dillon completed the scoring with the pick of the goals when Mackenzie Ross set him up to score from 20 yards.
Knighton Town Reserves and Builth Wells Reserves played out a 1-1 draw at Bryn-y-Castell. After a goalless first half, Leon Morris put Knighton ahead when Henry Shaw picked him out and he beat his marker to fire home. It looked as if that would secure three points but Jack Hughes equalised for Builth right at the death following a ball from Rhys Davies.
Substitute Corey Blythin-Williams scored twice in the second half as Presteigne St Andrews notched a 3-1 home success over Llanidloes Town Reserves. Ruben Lloyd had given Presteigne an interval lead following a short corner and they wasted several other first half chances. Blythin-Williams struck twice sandwiching a red card for Llanidloes substitute, Mark Pouch although the 10-man Daffs did pull one back through Griffin Jolly.
Llandrindod Wells Reserves move into the top six after a 3-2 home victory over Hay St Marys Development but almost shot themselves in the foot as the Saints staged a spirited fightback. Two goals from Ryan Sims and one from Oliver Belfield, with debutant Reiss Kinch providing three assists, handed the Spa Men a healthy lead but Haydn Morgan reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time. Othman Elkettas netted a second for Hay and Llandrindod might have endured some anxious late moments after Reuben Thomas picked up a second yellow card. Llandrindod goalkeeper Mark Truelove was also handed a straight red after the final whistle.
Former Mid Wales League (South) side, Newcastle extended their unbeaten run to five in the Montgomery Amateur League with Morgan Oakley (2), Tom Bright (2) and Mitchell Palmer on target in a 5-0 home success against Forden United Reserves.
CENTRAL WALES CUP
Llandrindod Wells booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Central Wales Cup with a convincing 6-1 victory over Tregaron on Sunday. The Spa Men quickly forged a two-goal lead with Fin Francis setting them on their way when Nyle Slade squared to him. Stuart Williams netted the second with a fine individual effort but keeper James Barker then carelessly conceded possession for Rhun Garner to reduce the arrears. But Llandrindod were well on top in the first half playing some lovely football and Arwyn Walby regained their two-goal advantage after Tregaron keeper Iestyn Rees Greaves had denied Kejan Foryszeswski.
In the second half, Walby slipped Danny Hall in for a fourth goal before Jack Evans and Tom Durant completed a comfortable passage into Round Four.
Caersws eased through with a 6-0 win over Llansantffraid Village with Callum Francis-Jones and Thomas Edwards giving them a two-goal interval lead. Tommy Rowlands extended the advantage before substitutes, Ashley Harries and Dillon Browne (2) completed the six hit.
Newtown and Guilsfield, the other Tier Two sides, are also in the last eight. Jamie Hyne (2), Findlay Starkey-Jones, Tarran Hollinshead and Devon Torry were the marksmen as Newtown won 5-2 at Kerry while Guilsfield went through 4-1 at Llechryd thanks to Callum Bromley, Kyle Capner, Aaron Lloyd and Adam Hailes.
Barmouth pulled off an impressive 3-0 win at Forden United with goals from Joe Soar, George John Sutherns and Will Jones while Ffostrasol produced the shock of the round winning 1-0 at Llanfair United with Keane Moore scoring the only goal after just three minutes.
Llandrindod’s reward for victory over Tregaron is a quarter-final tie away at Barmouth.
The full Central Wales Cup quarter-final draw is: Barmouth v Llandrindod Wells, Caersws v Guilsfield, Llanidloes Town or Tywyn Bryncrug v Dyffryn Banw or Four Crosses, Newtown v Ffostrasol
MMP CENTRAL WALES LEAGUES
Rhayader Town reignited their challenge for MMP Central Wales League (South) honours with Ollie Leadbetter netting twice in a a fine 4-2 victory over leaders, Lampeter Town. Leadbetter opened the scoring following a great run from Oscar Davies who added the second from a Ryan PK Jones pass. Rhayader extended their lead in the second half through Leadbetter with Davies again the provider. Daniel Evans pulled one back for Lampeter just after the hour mark but Rhys Thomas immediately regained Rhayader’s three-goal advantage from the penalty spot when Leadbetter was brought down. Leon Holmes netted a second for Lampeter with the afternoon’s second penalty five minutes from time but by then Rhayader were already celebrating a win which keeps their promotion hopes alive.
It was the perfect response from the Red Kites who had been beaten 3-1 at home by Penrhyncoch Reserves in midweek - a second league defeat in a row. Sam Rees cleared up following a goalmouth scramble to put them ahead and they were well on top in the first half. But 16-year-old Josh Lane equalised on the stroke of half-time and a second half double from Chris Wilkins won it for Penrhyn - his second coming in the final minute.
Penrhyncoch themselves suffered a 1-0 defeat at Bont on Saturday with Jordan Lee Perry the match winner with the only goal in first half stoppage time.
Llanidloes Town are showing signs of improvement and, after a couple of cup wins, beat Llanilar 6-2 to record their first league success of the term. Player-manager Dafydd Carruthers and Richie Evans each scored twice and Rhys Evans and Aaron Macken were also on target with Shon Morgans and Josh Jones-Newtown replying.

Montgomery Town are up to second with Jack Williams, the league’s top marksman, firing a hat-trick in a 4-2 win at Abermule.

Caersws saw their winless run in the JD Cymru North stretch to nine games although they did pick up a point in a goalless draw at home against 10-man Guilsfield. The visitors had Adam Knott sent off at the end of the first half but Caersws were unable to make the extra man count as Guils ‘keeper Luke Evans pulled off two stunning saves.
Penrhyncoch remain rock bottom in the one relegation spot after a damaging 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Flint Mountain with Dion Phillips gaining a late consolation for the Roosters.
