GARETH Hughes fired Rhayader a step closer to the Watson Financial Mid Wales (South) League title in a 1-0 home success over Newcastle.
The experienced defender struck with a 25 yard screamer midway through the first half to take The Weirglodd side nine points clear at the top of the table. Rhayader twice hit the woodwork in the first half through Rhys Thomas and Paul Bishop but had to settle for that solitary Hughes strike.
Brecon FC were understandably frustrated as they scheduled clash with Carno Reserves was postponed with Carno unable to raise a team but Knighton Town Reserves kept their hopes of honours alive with a hard earned 2-1 win at ever improving Talgarth Town.
Marc Wozencraft got on the end of a free-kick to give Knighton the lead on the half hour. That was how it stayed until midway through the second half when Ben Sharman levelled for the hosts. Stuart Jarvis got Knighton’s winner when his 40 yard free-kick deceived the home ‘keeper.
Builth Wells Reserves maintained their recent good form with a 2-1 victory at Presteigne Reserves. Topscorer, Dave Thomas put Builth ahead from the penalty spot following a trip on Jack Williams.
Alex James doubled the lead in the second half from a rebound but it was not all plain sailing for Graham Samuel’s side as Presteige pulled one back and also hit the post.
Llandrindod wells Reserves notched their first win in the league since October defeating Brecon Northcote 4-1 away from home.
Charlie Vermiere, Stuart Williams, Kieran McCarley and an own goal made up the Spa tally with Ellis Myles gaining a consolation for Northcote who remain bottom on goal difference.
