HAY St Mary’s travel to former Welsh Premier League side Welshpool Town on Saturday on the back of an impressive nine goal victory.

The Saints won 11-2 against Tywyn Bryncrug FC with Steve Morgan leading the way with a five goal haul including four in eight minutes at the beginning of the second half.

Other scorers were Brendan Hackett (3), Jack Biggs, Adi Lawford and Matt Croose.

Hay are now in fifth place in the Spar Mid Wales League Division One while former top-flight side Welshpool, who dropped out of the Welsh Premier when the division reduced from 18 to 12 clubs in 2010, are just one place off the bottom with only two wins all season.

On Saturday third from bottom Tywyn started on the front foot as the Saints struggled to adapt to the heavy conditions at their Forest Road pitch.

Rob Snedden crossed from the right on 17 minutes for top scorer Brendan Hackett headed to open the scoring and put the hosts ahead.

Hackett then doubled the lead in the 22nd minute beating the full back after a one two with Steve Morgan before passing the ball into the back of the net.

A mix up at the back saw the visitors pull a goal back on 30 minutes, the Tywyn striker making no mistake from close range. 2-1.

The two goal advantage was soon restored when Snedden was brought down in the area after being put in on goal by Stu Davies, referee Chris Corfield pointed to the spot. Hackett sent the keeper the wrong way to claim his hat-trick and put the Saints up 3-1 at halftime.

The opening eight minutes of the second half saw the Saints play some of the best football seen at Forest Road in a long time. In that spell Steve Morgan stole the show with his four goal haul, Hackett set him up for the first straight from kick off before he added three more to make the score 7-1 with the teams having only just changed ends.

Matt Croose scored a header from a Hackett corner for 8-1, youngster Kyle Harding set up Adi Lawford for 9-1, Morgan then netted another for his fifth and his side’s tenth.

Jack Biggs finished the scoring for the home side with an excellent solo goal from the edge of the area.

A Tywyn midfielder had the last say scoring from 45 yards, he later confessed it was a pass but it looked a great goal whatever it was.

The Saints declared themselves happy with a great performance in difficult conditions, and pleased to have last season’s player of the year Matt James back from university.

Welshpool come in to the game on the back of another defeat. They returned from Rhayader Town's Weirglodd ground with a 2-0 loss. Kick-off on Saturday at the Maes Y Dre Ground in Montgomeryshire is at 2pm.
