LLANDRINDOD Wells and Rhayader Town are both through to the first round proper of this season’s JD Welsh Cup after 6-2 victories at the weekend.
Llandrindod overcame a potential banana skin when they made the short trip to Newbridge but the Spa men prevailed. There were two goals each for Robbie Nicholls, Kieran McCarley and Stuart Williams with Ashley Beach and Ollie Woods replying for The Villagers.
Rhayader Town welcomed Machynlleth to The Weirglodd and they too eased through with goals from Tom Bethell (pen), Mattie Lewis, Mark Davies, Dane Griffiths, Johnny Samuel and assistant manager, Gareth Hughes with Harry Holy bagging both for the visitors.
Llandrindod and Rhayader have been placed in the southern section in the first round draw with Llandrindod having to travel to Merthyr Saints while Rhayader have home advantage over Caerau Ely.
Hay St Marys would have dearly loved to be in the first round but The Saints turned in a disappointing performance which resulted in a 2-1 exit at the hands of Llanrhaeadr. Jack Biggs gave Hay the lead but Llanrhaeadr won it with goals from Iwan Matthews and Iain Edmunds.
Injury hit Knighton Town bowed out 3-0 at Carno who scored through Toby Evans, Jordan Jones and Peter Rees but Llanidloes Town and Welshpool Town are through.
Rhys Evans scored a hat-trick as Llanidloes beat Berriew 4-2 at home and Wil Pritchard was another hat-trick man in Welshpool’s 3-1 win at Borth United whose Ben Byrne replied.
