It was a mixed weekend for local sides in the JD Welsh Cup qualifying rounds, with Rhayader Town progressing to the first round proper, while Brecon Corries and Knighton Town bowed out.
Rhayader Town had a long trip to Anglesey but earned a fine 4-1 win at Llanerch-y-Medd, who play in the North Wales Coast West Premier League.
Rhys Thomas put Rhayader in front with a deft lob before Cameron Mills added a second from a Thomas corner. Tomos Hughes pulled one back for the home side from the penalty spot just before half-time but two goals in three minutes midway through the second half sealed it for Rhayader. Summer signing, Oscar Davies regained their two goal advantage with a thunderbolt from outside the box and Ollie Leadbetter netted a fourth from a lovely Owain Rowlands through ball. It should have been five for The Red Kites but player-coach, Lance Jones missed a penalty in stoppage time.
Meanwhile, Brecon Corries were beaten 4-1 at home by Cefn Cribwr.
The visitors made a blistering start, going 2-0 up inside four minutes through Danny Woolfenden and Ross Hooper. Despite pressure from the Corries, Cefn Cribwr remained on top and could have added to their lead before half-time.
Damien Daniels’ side rallied after the break, with Jay Hughes denied from distance and Dale Evans striking the post, but Cefn Cribwr effectively sealed victory with two quick goals from Jack Teisar midway through the second half.
Joel Evans pulled one back late on for the hosts, but it was little more than consolation as Cefn Cribwr progressed comfortably.
Knighton Town also lost, suffering a narrow 4-3 defeat at Pwlheli.
Knighton travelled without forwards, Luke Boundford, Callum Stead and Taylor Wozencraft and fell behind to an early goal from Louis McFarlane. Kieran Dovey equalised on 42 minutes and Shane Sutton edged Knighton ahead soon after half-time. Joshua Jones levelled almost immediately, before Ashley Ainsworth and a second from Jones put Pwlheli in the driving seat. Knighton, who certainly deserved something from the tie, refused to lie down and Henry Shaw netted their third on the final whistle but it could not prevent The Radnor Robins slipping to their first defeat of the term.
Other Mid Wales teams to progress in the cup were Bow Street, Dolgellau, Llanfair United, Berriew, Welshpool Town and Forden United. Bow Street needed a stoppage time own goal from Josh Mazzarella to beat Penycae 3-2 with Rhys Hughes and Caio Carruthers having netted their earlier goals.
Dolgellau trounced Llanidloes Town 6-0 thanks to Will Gruffydd (2), Rob Evans, Osian Morris, Dion James and Gerwyn Williams while Nyasha Mwamuka (2), Harvey Morris and Tomos Jones were on the scoresheet as Llanfair came out on top 4-2 against Cemaes Bay with influential player-manager, Karl Seliaerts providing three assists.
Berriew came from behind to win 2-1 at Greenfield with goals from Alex Siddi (pen) and Aron James while Forden produced one of the best results of the day. They beat Ardal League side Llanwrst United 3-2 on penalties after holding their higher graded opponents to a goalless draw.
Welshpool also needed penalties to knock out Four Crosses after their tie ended at 1-1 with Cameron Rogers forcing the shoot out with a late equaliser after Nathan Hughes had put Welshpool ahead.
