IT was back to league commitments on Saturday as the Corries welcomed Llantwit Fardre at the Rich Field in a game sponsored by SEER Construction.

In fine recent form the home side were well prepared for a tough encounter which was certainly the case.

The match was fiercely competitive from the off with both sides showing the supporters a decent mix of open play coupled with some shoddy defending and spectacular saves from both keepers.

In the first half it could be argued that the Corries were in control and created enough chances to score their fair share. Gareth Aplin was causing all sorts of problems out on the right wing and on 35 minutes provided the cross for Paul Keddle (sponsored by LMP Developments) to fire the Corries ahead with a deflected shot.

Unfortunately the lead only lasted seven minutes as a mix-up in defence allowed Fardre to capitalise and level the scores shortly before the interval. To make matters worse the travelling Fardre made use of more comedy defending in injury time to take a 1-2 lead at the half.

Eager to put things right, the Corries came out battling and soon had their equaliser this time through player-manager Damien Daniels (sponsored by SEER Construction).

On 50 minutes Aplin again provided the corner for Daniels to power a header home from close range. With their tails up things got better again on 65 minutes as this time Oli James crossed in for Man of the Match Paul Keddle to take the glory of his second and the home sides third to make it 3-2.

Not to be outdone, Fardre continued to work hard and deservedly equalised albeit in questionable circumstances. Keeper Price gathered a corner only to have the ball illegally kicked from his grasp by two players resulting in another goal-mouth scramble and another away goal. 3-3 with eight minutes remaining.

Both teams continued their assaults and with time running out Fardre took the lead with an exceptionally well finished free kick. Despite battling on the Corries were unable to salvage anything and eventually lost a match in which they deserved more.

Nobody could argue that a draw would have been a fair result but in reality the sloppy goals they conceded was enough to cement their own downfall despite a spirited display.

The Corries would like to thank match sponsor SEER Construction for their continued support.

This Saturday the Corries are at home to Aberbargoed Buds in the FAW Cup second Round. The Corries are the lowest ranked team left in the national competition and a win would see them in the last 10 of the Southern region. With Cardiff, Swansea and 10 more teams entering the third Round draw the prospect of hosting one of Wales’ elite teams is a real possibility.

Chairman of Brecon Corries Baz Price said: "The achievements of this team thus far in the competition is testament to the efforts of all those involved in the Club from the Junior Section coaches through to Damien Daniels and his team.

"I’m immensely proud that Brecon Corries AFC are one of only 40 teams left in the competition and we’ve proven our worth in still being so. Aberbargoed are a decent outfit playing in Welsh League Division two but we’ve beaten teams of this standard before and relish the challenge this coming Saturday at 2pm down the Rich Field."
