INTERNATIONAL athlete Tom Marshall is set to compete alongside hundreds of runners of all abilities at a free to enter race in Builth Wells.

The Groe Parkrun takes place at 9am every Saturday at the Groe in the centre of Builth and runners of all abilities are encouraged to take part in the 5km timed run.

Marshall, who is from Rhayader, competed for Wales, over 1,500m, at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia and in 2017 was part of the Great Britain team at the European Cross Country relay championships.

The former Llandrindod High School pupil announced his intention to take part in this Saturday, April 27 event, which is one of a series of park runs organised all across the UK, on his Twitter account.

He wrote: "Heading up to the @Groeparkrun on Saturday for a run out to blow a few cobwebs. Fantastic to have a local Parkrun in Mid Wales. Looking forward to this one."

Marshall, whose 2018 summer track season was disrupted by injury that also forced him to miss the winter cross country and indoor season, added the 5,000m course will be his longest distance since before he went to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April last year.

The Groe Parkrun was launched earlier in March and last weekend’s event was the seventh and BBC Wales weather presenter Sue Charles, a keen amateur runner, was among the 277 people who either ran, jogged or walked the course.

Brecon Athletics Club athletes set the standard at the event, where even under the warm conditions on Saturday, they managed to set course records.

Brychan Price Davies set the male record with 16.21, which beat the previous mark set by Tim Iveson by 20 seconds, while club mate, and junior athlete, Tiegan Ward improved her female record, knocking 25 seconds off her previous best time to finish the course in 19.55.

The event is free to enter but all runners are encouraged to register before hand so they can be timed. For more details see the event’s website
